Elijah And Elisha 2023

Elijah and Elisha were prophets to the Northern Kingdom after Israel split into two nations. They served as God's agents to chasten several wicked kings.

  • Elijah the Tishbite

    During the reign of the wicked king Ahab, Elijah showed up out of nowhere and turned off the rain for three and a half years. He also raised a widow's son from the dead and slaughtered the prophets of Baal when they could not demonstrate that their god had any power.
  • Kleptocracy

    After defeating the prophets of Baal, Jezebel threatened Elijah and he fled to Mt. Horeb for an encounter with God. The result of that encounter was that God directed him to pass on his office to Elisha. Jezebel later used her governmental position to murder an innocent man and steal his vineyard on behalf of her husband.
  • Transfer of the Mantle

    Ahab dies in battle and is succeeded by his son Ahaziah who then dies falling from an upper chamber. With that, Elijah passes on his mantle to Elisha and is taken up to heaven.
  • The Moabite Rebellion

    After the death of Ahab, Moab rebelled against Israel. Jehoram and Jehoshaphat joined forces to bring them back under tribute. When the army ran out of water, the kings consulted Elisha as to how to proceed. After that, Elisha provided oil for a prophet's widow and raised a boy from the dead.
  • Naaman the Leper

    2 Kings 5-6 present several vignettes in the career of Elisha. Two of these, the healing of Naaman and the blinding of the Syrian army, have to do with the relationship between Israel and Syria. When Naaman, the commander of the Syrian army is healed, he acknowledges the primacy of YHVH as well as his gratitude to Elisha. In a subsequent scene, the whole Syrian army is trying to hunt down and eliminate Elisha.
  • Full Circle

    The siege of Samaria. Elisha predicts the siege will be broken on the morrow and God puts the Syrians to flight. Coming full circle from Elijah's charge in 1 Kings 13, Elisha anoints Hazael as king over Syria and Jehu king over Israel.
